How the EU Settlement Scheme Could Affect Your Business

28 January 2020

With the UK set to leave the EU on 31 January 2020 it’s worth starting a dialogue with your staff on the topic if you haven’t already. We’ve put together a guide on what the EU Settlement Scheme means for employers and their staff.

What the EU Settlement Scheme means for employers and employees
The EU Settlement Scheme has been introduced to provide a way for non-British citizens to continue living and working in the United Kingdom after 30 June 2021. Your staff from the following areas will be affected:

  • Nations within the European Union
  • Nations within the European Economic Area (this is the EU, plus IcelandLiechtenstein and Norway)
  • Switzerland

What are the deadlines?
The deadline for applying to the EU Settlement Scheme is 30 June 2021 and those applying need to be living in the UK before 31 December 2020 which is the end of the transition period.

Applicants can apply for settled or pre-settled status dependent on whether they have been a resident in the UK for at least five years.

Useful information to share with your staff
Be sure to send your staff a link to the gov.uk page for EU Settlement Scheme applications. It’s available in 26 languages and covers everything they may need to know.
